November/December 2018
In November we are focusing on informational text using nonfiction which requires the children returning to the text to prove their answers. We are beginning our lessons on the celebrations of light - in many cultures and the differences and similarities between them. We learned about the history of Diwali. The beautiful candles and oil lamps have a wonderful message for the children. We will light a menorah, a Kwanza candle and talk about many different cultural traditions as we move into the holiday season.
Children are continuing work on botany parts and functions, vertebrate parts and functions, and the six traits of writing.
All of the children are working on regular math operations as well as practice follow up for individual math lessons. Cursive is practiced by all three grades and the cursive abc's are done daily to practice putting letters together.
All of the children are now doing a vocabulary journal. The firsts are just doing simple cards with definitions and a visual. The seconds and thirds also have to put it in their own words which is very challenging for them.
Work that is on going - geometry, lines, angles, geometric shapes, vertices, sides, nets, fractions, decimals, long division, using test tubes and stamp game, and daily math card practice.
For language, syllables, phonemes, phonograms, reading groups, and writing practice with the six traits is ongoing.
We will begin a study of engineering in the next couple of weeks. This will lead us into the building of gingerbread houses during the last week of school prior to the holiday break. We will have a sign up for things that are needed for the houses.
