February 2019
We built a replica of the Jamestown Settler's Fort, talked about the Mayflower and conditions on the Mayflower and how the people who came may have felt and why they left the European continent to come here. This led to a discussion about immigration and Native Americans. Always a fun unit! We even had a Mayflower Meal (beef jerky, crackers, and string cheese). The children did math to figure out how much space was available per person on the Mayflower. They came up with three feet square (also an area and perimeter work!) This was taped out on the floor and they each took turns having their meal in the Mayflower space. Of course we talked about the explorers and the westward expansion of the U.S. We drew names from a cup and chose a 'King', a 'Tax Collector', and two guards. Each child was given a cup of gold (pretzel sticks). Throughout the day the 'Kind' could send the Tax Collector to get pretzels from those he felt were not paying their tax or any other disturbance the King felt was happening. This led to a few 'peasants' being put in jail and cries of "This isn't fair!" Of course, that was the lesson - it wasn't fair and that's why people wanted a better life and endured all they did to get to the new land.
We begin South America research. Topics and packets were sent home. Presentations begin on the 19th of February and our luncheon will be on the Friday prior to Spring Break.
